The Complete Engineer
Like many a budding engineer, Alex Shelbourne’s future career started with an interest in cars. While the Saturday job for most teenagers would be working in a café or department store, his was getting his hands dirty at a local MOT centre.
This interest on cars continued into his late teens with him single handedly restoring cars such as a Mrk 3 Cortina and teaching himself how to weld in the process.
Precision Engineering
With a B Tech Diploma in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering under his belt, Alex undertook work experience at a local precision engineering company.
The work experience soon developed into an apprenticeship with the same company followed by full time employment.
The welding aspect of engineering was very much to Alex’s liking so he took it upon himself to take a City & Guilds course in MIG, TIG, MMA and gas welding.
Jobs at other engineering companies followed including stints at a toolmaker where his welding skills came to the fore and at a telecoms company where a love of travel also hit the CV.
The Alpha Laser Pro
Another job at an automotive parts toolmaker became the foundation of Alex’s expertise in laser welding. Using Alpha Laser equipment, Alex spent the next few years, servicing and maintaining the mould making tooling until…
…his talents were spotted by the team at TLM.
Practical Solutions
9 months down the line, Alex is now an integral member of the TLM service team. Visiting customers around the country, his love of travel is well catered for.
While his practical hands-on knowledge of laser welding ensures these same customers’ welding systems remain onstream. In fact, “practical” is very much how Alex describes himself and is something he takes into his life outside TLM.
For example, there’s the broken down washing machine he resurrected from the dead. More recently, he designed his own car port with electronic gates based on a cantilever construction.
Alex is the welding specialist on the TLM service team.
He’s a vital part of the laser welding services we offer our customers, including in-house training and a laser welding locum service.
